Return of the LAN | Term 1 Week 7 Newsletter
Mon 15 Nov 2021 NewsletterHiya! It's week 7, which means we have another LAN to look forward to - check out this week's newsletter to find out more!
Hello there! It's week 7, and we've got lots of events running for you all this week - check them out below!
⚡ Lightning Talks
[Week 7] Wednesday 17th, 6pm-7:30pm, Discord & Teams
Lightning Talks are back this week! Although originally planned to be in person, the location of one of our speakers meant this wasn't possible - but that won't stop us from having more talks later this term 👀
We'll be streaming them all in our Discord server, with a cross-stream to MS Teams. As usual, we'll have three talks in total:
- Minesweeper is Hard - A slightly questionable exploration of one of the oldest digital games, that ends up leading us down the rabbit hole of computational complexity.
- Using Emmet, Because Programmers are Lazy - A demonstration on using Emmet, a tool made to help you write a bunch of HTML before the inevitable heat death of the universe.
- Keeping on Track - A very brief introduction to the world of rail routing, ticketing and aligned systems, and some war stories from times things didn't quite go to plan.
If any of these sound interesting to you, then by all means, hop along! You'll have the opportunity to ask questions after each talk.
⛄ Pretty Cool LAN
[Week 7] Friday 19th @ 7pm - Sunday 21st @ 6pm, LIB2
Our second LAN of the year is happening this weekend from 7pm on Friday all the way until 6pm on Sunday in LIB2. Don't know where that is? Click on the link just above for a map.
To reserve a spot for your PC over the weekend, signup and choose a seat here: https://warwick.gg/events/pretty-cool-lan-nov-21#signup
Can't make it in person? That's okay! We'll still be hanging around in the Discord and streaming some of our events there. Speaking of events, here's the final schedule:
Note: Friday Night Gaming will also be held at LIB2, instead of our usual location.
Hopefully some of those sound interesting - if you've not got much time free over the weekend, whether that's due to workload, stress, or other engagements, we'd recommend dropping by during the evenings. If, on the other hand, you have all the free time in the world, the LAN will be running for a continuous period of 47 hours. No PC or Laptop? Don't worry, you'll still be able to grab a VR slot, and take part in any of the party, console, or tabletop games. Make sure to bring/drag/yeet your friends along!
As this event is in-person, we'll be asking people to follow the following Covid-19 safety precautions:
- All attendees will be asked to check in on arrival, in the event of a positive case.
- Social distancing and mask-wearing will be strongly encouraged, hand sanitiser and wipes will be available.
- We advise taking a lateral flow test before and after the event, and having the NHS Covid-19 app installed and active.
- This should be obvious, but if you test positive or display ANY Covid-19 symptoms, please do not attend the event!
- If you test positive for Covid-19 in the days following you attending the event, get in touch via DM or exec@uwcs.co.uk
With all that out of the way, we hope to see you there!
🏆 UWCS Challenge
[Week 8] Wednesday 24th, 5pm-8pm, Department of Computer Science
In our latest attempt to ramp up the frequency of academic events, we're holding a programming competition! Come on down to tackle some cool problems on your own or in a group, spread across a range of difficulties throughout the evening. Maybe you'll even win one of our prizes, and hey, maybe you'll learn something too!
Free pizza will also be provided at the event - hopefully that might sweeten the deal for some of you...
