Mon 05 Oct Newsletter

Hello everyone! And welcome, old and new, to the 2026/2027 academic year at the best university in Woxbridge™

To all the freshers who are reading this and wondering what this email is, how they got it and why they're receiving it, let it be my secretarial honour to explain: every week Crystal and I (Odin) take turns in seeing who the better procrastinator is writing UWCS' weekly newsletter to let you, our dearest members, know what awesome events we're running for the week ahead to try and alleviate the monotony and stress of the next 3-4 years of your life :). The absurdity of these newsletters tends to increase as the academic year progresses, so make sure to stay tuned B)

also if you're reading this on uwcs.co.uk, what are you doing!? go get your free-ish society membership here

To all the non-freshers 🦈 reading this (gotcha lmao), welcome back. This year is our year. 🙏

In case you thought we were taking our foot off the pedal after Welcome Week, you're dead wrong. Take a little gander below at what we've got in store this week.

But first, a word from one of our sponsors (and our welfare team, of course):

📈 Marshall Wace Workshop 🧑‍💻

🕕 Mon 12th Oct 6pm - 8pm 📍 TBC

Marshall Wace is coming to campus on Monday 12th October for a hands-on systems design workshop!

Work in small groups alongside MW engineers to tackle a real technical problem, present your solution, and receive live feedback—with prizes for the winning team.

You’ll also meet engineers and recruiters and learn about Technology Intern and Graduate opportunities. Food and drinks are provided.

Spaces are limited: apply to register your interest. Selected attendees will receive confirmation at least three days before the event.

💜 Welfare Notice

UWCS has two Welfare Officers: Kevin (Discord: yummycatfood) and Erica (Discord: heldesar). They can also be reached via their email inbox at welfare@uwcs.co.uk.

Heading off to uni, or coming back for another year, can feel overwhelming. You can speak to Kevin and Erica at any time via Discord, email, or in person for advice, support, and help navigating the uni’s services, or to raise concerns about behaviour at our events. No problem is too small to reach out about.

Any discussions you have with them will be treated sensitively. They will not share details more widely without your permission, except where they believe there is a serious risk of harm, a safeguarding concern, or another situation where they are required to escalate.

🏍️ Warwick Engineering Projects Talk 🏎️

🕕 Mon 5th Oct 6pm - 7pm 📍 L3

who would win, my O(n³!) solution or the WRe6?

Do you want to get involved with one of the engineering teams at Warwick? Today, engineering teams such as Warwick Moto, Warwick Racing and Warwick Racing AI will be giving talks about what they do, their current projects and where you could fit in as a new team member (I've been told they want software engineers)!

If this sounds like something you are interested in, come to L3 at 6pm today to find out whether you are a fit, and how to apply before applications close on the 9th of October.

🍔 Pub Dinner 🍻

🕖 Mon 5th Oct 7pm - 9pm 📍 Dirty Duck

⚠️ This pub contains 'Strips & Chips', which is a highly addictive substance.

If you haven't had the chance to experience the magnificence of 'the duck' yet, you're definitely missing out!

The Dirty Duck is our very own campus pub and is just a hop, skip and a jump away from DCS. So, if your fridge is looking a bit empty, or you're craving a pint of your favourite drink after a long day of lectures, come on down to the Duck for a yap with your fellow UWCS-ians.

🐧 Linux Labs BONUS 💻

For all of you who were unable to log in during the Linux Labs on Wednesday, the problems should be fixed now. If you’re still having issues logging in, please email dcs.tech@warwick.ac.uk. To account for this hiccup, we will be having a bonus Linux Lab session on Tuesday at 3pm. Come along if you’re still unsure about how to navigate Linux, as we will be guiding you through the lab sheet so you can set up your own DCS webpage!

💬 Wildcards & Chill (Powerpoint) 💬

🕒 Wed 7th Oct 3pm - 5pm 📍 CS0.07

ever wondered why Wednesday starts with a W? (answer rhymes with 'ildcards')

To start off our weekly Wildcards event we want to get to know all of the Wildcards a lot better - how you may ask? Why, ridiculous and insane PowerPoints of course!

Do you have an interest you NEED people to know about? Perhaps why your favourite movie/game/musical is the BEST THING EVER CREATED™️? Or maybe you have some random informative presentation from 5 years ago?

Please bring your most unhinged presentations and come along!

(and if you need some ideas, DM Irene (eneri0564), she'll give you three interesting topics just for you)

The presentations don’t have to be long at all, and you can just come and watch if you want! (If there’s not enough presentations we’ll switch to board games so)

But most importantly - FREE SNACK AND DRINKS‼️‼️ these will be provided from Co-op courtesy of DCS 🙏

a power cable, a cooling pipe, i wonder what's next....

The Friday Night™ fun continues outside of Welcome Week in unquestionably the best way to round off the week, nooooooo bias found here 👀.

Your Gaming Coordinators for this exec cycle are: Luna (lunazeta_), Santiago (colombian.), and Maddie (fridge06). Mafi (sinisterglace) is also your Gaming Co-ordinator until Term 1, Week 5 - come up to us if you need help logging in, finding something, or even just to yap (we dont bite :D). We'll often be identifiable by our exec hoodies :3

It wouldn't be Friday Night Gaming™ without the Gaming™🎮, and we have a BIG selection of things for you to choose from, and no its not just above average! its big I swear!😔😔

There are loads of options for consoles: Xbox (with Rockband), Wii, Nintendo Switch 1s (yes thats plurarl) AND a Nintendo Switch 2, PS4 and more. All of these have a HUGE variety of games.

More into Steam? We have that too, just ask us for our DCS account login, or login to Steam on your own account! Not only that, but you can get full access to the department computers and enjoy a wide selection of free games (wow!)

AND WE'RE STILLLLL NOT DONEEEE. We have a VR headset, go get immersed in your favourite 🏎️🏎️ car go vroom games™ or others! Beat Saber in particular a popular choice, but we have PLENTY of options available! Not to mention we have a RACING RIG!! Go spin that wheel and press those pedals, and fiddle with your gears. Get on those in game roads and REV that engine until youre on a motorway in a 3 wheel car at 120mph.

AND THATS STILLLLLLL NOT IT YETTTT. For those of you that prefer a little less video in your game, we have some board games in our cupboards for you to get along with.

thats it... for now 👀

We hope to see you there :3

Important: FNG is a sober event, please don't bring alcohol in, or you will be asked to leave. Also Important: Tidy up after yourself before leaving, the department does a great kindness in letting us run this event, it'd be nice if we could stay on their good side!🙏
