Sun 01 Mar Newsletter

GUYS THE ELECTION IS HEREEEEE (I've come back from the dead just to announce this). Your true, beloved and very much real Secretary is back! All I can say is that life was a lot recently... at some point I was imprisoned (well celebrating rly) in Nottingham, then London for CNY (must respect my traditions). Happy late CNY and happy Ramadan to those who celebrate :)). Honestly can't believe it's already week 8. Absolutely insane. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜ญ

Also I hope everyone enjoyed the ball yesterday (if you came) because I sure did after Irene made me into a notorious anime character with her makeup skills. ๐Ÿ’ฏ

AGM ON WEDNESDAY

If you're running for a role, feel free to reach out to the execs! Also, don't forget to actually show up prepared (script, slides, costumes (?))! It's also the best opportunity for absolutely diabolical debates to decide on the motions that bind our society together muahaha. As Sun Tzu says, "the supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting".

Welfare Notice

UWCS has 2 Welfare Officers: Raven (Discord: raven0034) and Tom (Discord tomo.li). We can also be reached via our email inbox at welfare@uwcs.co.uk.

You can speak to us at any time via Discord, email, and in-person (often in our exec hoodies), for advice, signposting and support. This can be for navigating the uni's support services, or to disclose something not right that happened due to someone's conduct at one of our events, and much more.

Any discussions you have will stay with the specific Welfare Officer, unless you permit otherwise.

๐Ÿ’ฌ MOSAIC Talk on Diversity in Computing ๐Ÿ’ฌ

๐Ÿ•“ Mon 2nd Mar 4pm - 5pm ๐Ÿ“ OC0.05

We love WOMENNNN

Gendering computing: the history of programming as womens' work Today, computing is widely seen as a masculine discipline, yet this has not always been the case. Many of the people sought out to programme the first modern computers were women, who were sought out precisely because the work was expected to be 'feminine' in nature. Only as the discipline evolved did its status as 'masculine' work become solidified as it is today.

In this talk, we'll take a step back in history to look at the ways in which the newly emergent field of computing was uniquely suited to the women seeking jobs in it. Many pioneering women used the emerging software market to craft new kinds of workplaces; ones which could met their needs in an era where social and legal restrictions actively pushed mothers out of work for good. Simultaneously, the world of programming gave them unheard-of opportunities to forge careers as skilled professionals in a technical field, a path that would otherwise have been entirely closed to them.

Run your limbs out. Make them thicker and jucier.

Weekly runs, open to all members and friends of UWCS. An average week might look like a 5k around campus on a pre-planned route, but as this is the first term for which the event is being run, expect to see a variety of ideas each week.

๐Ÿ‘พ๐ŸŽฎ Friday Night Gaming (7pm till LateTM) ๐ŸŽฎ๐Ÿ‘พ

๐Ÿ•– Fri 6th Mar 7pm - 5am ๐Ÿ“ CS0.03

Games >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Sleep

Friday Nights. Gaming. FNG. That's all we've known. PCs, consoles, VR, snacks and drinks. The pinnacle. The untoppable and unstoppable force. Sometimes you must choose between the last U1 and continuing Never Gonna Give You Up on Clone Hero. Your home for some beats? Aye, a worthy sacrifice.

Join us in DCS every Friday from 7pm, until you see Raven conked out on the floor from exhaustion sometime on Saturday.

The Gaming Coordinators this year are: Raven (raven0034), Rob (spooky3142), Lyon (keyboardsky), Arda (mangowizard), Sharvil (w.0lf), Laina (vomitspawn), and Santiago (colombian.) - if you need help or just wanna yap, come find us :)

We have our DCS account login - any game (including via Steam!) that you can get running, you can play. We also have several consoles, including Xboxes, PS4, Switch 1 & 2, Wii, along with our PCs which I call Nuke Machine and Microwave, which you can use our Valve Index on, play Clone Hero, and more! We also have board games for anybody wanting a less tech-based way to enjoy games :)

Important: FNG is a sober event, please don't bring alcohol in, or you will be asked to leave.

Also Important: Make sure to tidy up after yourself before leaving, the department does a great kindness in letting us run this event, preferably we stay on their good side!

Hope to see you there :3 (Note: you don't have to be a DCS student to come along!)

๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿด Capture The Flag - IRL Edition ๐Ÿด๐Ÿšฉ

๐Ÿ• Sat 7th Mar 1pm - 4pm ๐Ÿ“ Outside DCS

Some funny tagline here

NOT A PROGRAMMING ACTIVITY. Outside, with real grass. You have been warned.

I woke up. And within 10 mins time I've been doing my soft eng group project for almost 6 hours straight non-stop on a call. I feel my eyes drying into crisps. Genuinely, I feel my soul leaving my body, my eyes losing their moist and life. Life has never felt crispier. Anyways, hope you see you guys around this week (hopefully baltting to glory in the AGM).
