Love is blind | Newsletter T2W6

Sun 15 Feb Newsletter

Hello everybody,

Our dearest secretaries are indisposed this weekend, and that means you're getting a slightly different vibe of newsletter this week. And coming off of Valentine's weekend, I thought we'd take a brief moment to talk about it.

Ah, love. Whether this weekend has been a whirlwind of affection - rapidly draining your bank balance into the red - or a solitary night in with naught but coursework and/or some videos of questionable repute to keep you company, love is a driving force we all need in our lives - whether we want to admit it or not. Some people claim that computer scientists, mathematicians, and those in adjacent fields are bad at managing interpersonal relationships. After 17 months as a university computer scientist - 15 of which have been spent observing our members as an exec of some capacity - these people are 100% indisputably correct.

Nevertheless, if you have found yourself lonely, remember that you're worthwhile. There are 70 million people in this country, and 8 billion across the globe: statistically, there's someone out there for you. Part of the process of finding this person is going out and meeting as many people with common interests as possible. And do you know where you can find these people? UWCS events! Which reminds me, I should really start writing about those...

Quite a fun week this week, so keep an eye out for announcements in the days to come. Also (if I get this out on time), our 10th annual WASD is still going on, and has already smashed its goals and raised over Β£2,800 so far. Every penny goes to SpecialEffect, a charity that brings the fun of gaming to physically disabled people and children you'd otherwise miss out. It's a fantastic cause, so if you have any money left over this weekend, head over to warwickspeed.run and donate :)

Now, onwards!

Welfare Notice

UWCS has 2 Welfare Officers: Raven (Discord: raven0034) and Tom (Discord tomo.li). We can also be reached via our email inbox at welfare@uwcs.co.uk.

You can speak to us at any time via Discord, email, and in-person (often in our exec hoodies), for advice, signposting and support. This can be for navigating the uni's support services, or to disclose something not right that happened due to someone's conduct at one of our events, and much more.

Any discussions you have will stay with the specific Welfare Officer, unless you permit otherwise.

UWCS AGM & Elections: Get Membership Now!

We have our annual general meeting and elections coming up on Wednesday Week 8. In accordance with Warwick SU regulations, everyone who wishes to vote or stand for election at the AGM must have Computing Society membership by 6pm on Wednesday this week (18th February). Now, definitionally, if you're receiving this email, you already have UWCS membership - congratulations! However, if you have friends, and those friends don't have membership, and those friends wish to engage in this Society's great expression of democracy, they can purchase membership from the Warwick SU webpage: warwicksu.com/societies-sports/societies/computing/.

(Very Short) Ball Notice

This is (yet another) brief notice that people will ball tickets should have received an email on Friday about seating arrangements. This was sent to whichever email address you provided on the ticket form, not necessarily your main Warwick one. If you think you should've got it and didn't, first check your spam, then contact me - either over our Discord server (Embezzlement Thomas) or by email.

Friday Night Gaming (7pm till LateTM)

πŸ•– Fri 20th Feb 7pm - Sat 21st Feb 5am πŸ“ CS0.03

The post-WASD victory party

Friday Nights. Gaming. FNG. That's all we've known. PCs, consoles, VR, snacks and drinks. The pinnacle. The untoppable and unstoppable force. Sometimes you must choose between the last U1 and continuing Never Gonna Give You Up on Clone Hero. Your home for some beats? Aye, a worthy sacrifice.

Join us in DCS every Friday from 7pm, until you see Raven conked out on the floor from exhaustion sometime on Saturday.

The Gaming Coordinators this year are: Raven (raven0034), Rob (spooky3142), Lyon (keyboardsky), Arda (mangowizard), Sharvil (w.0lf), Laina (vomitspawn), and Santiago (colombian.) - if you need help or just wanna yap, come find us :)

We have our DCS account login - any game (including via Steam!) that you can get running, you can play. We also have several consoles, including Xboxes, PS4, Switch 1 & 2, Wii, along with our PCs which I call Nuke Machine and Microwave, which you can use our Valve Index on, play Clone Hero, and more! We also have board games for anybody wanting a less tech-based way to enjoy games :)

Important: FNG is a sober event, please don't bring alcohol in, or you will be asked to leave.

Also Important: Make sure to tidy up after yourself before leaving, the department does a great kindness in letting us run this event, preferably we stay on their good side!

Hope to see you there :3 (Note: you don't have to be a DCS student to come along!)

That's your lot for this week. And now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to grind Software Engineering and Formal Languages until my hair turns white.
