Before starting the meeting, various members of the exec familiarised themselves with the term “moebius”, with regards to Jake’s onion ring.

The exec meeting started with a 1024ms silence, to respect the passing of a dear friend. With the release of Windows XP, and the Win9x/ME line being finally phased out, the days of one of our greatest childhood friends are now past.

The first social took place in South Central the night preceding this execeutive meeting. Well, the word “social” should be applied in the loosest sense, as the turnout was low, when compared to last year.

In the frantic few minutes in the opening of the meeting, the exec decided not to have any affiliations on the budget. The server was discussed; for details see section 2. Another item bought up was that of magazine subscriptions. If anyone has an idea for a magazine to which they’d like to subscribe, bring it to the exec’s attention. You should at least know the name of the magazine and the subscription cost.

The Antichris has obtained contact details for one Mike Cowlishaw (sp?) in DCS, who apparently has somethingorother to do with IBM. Mike (Squire, not Cowlishaw) to talk to Mike (Cowlishaw, not Squire), since he at least sort of knows him.

Chris Salmon will chair the AGM and count the votes, and do all that osrt of stuff becuase he’s easy to bribe. Um, because he’s impartial, since he’s leaving and isn’t running for a position next year. We will hold the vote via a paper ballot, each voter given a slip of paper with the positions contested and a gap to write a number - each candidate for a position will be given a number, and they can write their vote for each position next to the position on the paper. Each candidate, prior to voting, will be given 5 minutes or so to give some sort of speech - if they so wish - or if they are not present, may send a speech to Chris Salmon to be read out on their behalf. Jake to print voting slips.

Tim Clark still hasn’t got back to us, Chris Salmon to follow it up. Rumours of an anti-Linux inquisition roaming ITS have yet to be confirmed.

We went - as a whole, with Tom Worley in tow - to a meeting with Ian Brown, who is with the Onion. Essentially, he had nothing against the idea of us having a server in The Onion, but only if it was running NT - for which the university could give us a very good deal at only three hundred pounds. Three hundred pounds. Ian Brown didn’t want a server running Linux in his office since he didn’t know enough to be able to administer it himself in the event of an emergency. We then emailed Tim Clark of ITS, who was very enthusiastic about Linux, but had no idea where we could put the box… He is currently “investigatin’” and will be back to us on Friday. To those not already /in the know/, ‘Linux’ is pronounced as if it were spelt ‘Leinnucks’. Roughly. /Not/ as if it were spelt ‘Line-Ucks’. That would be wrong. So very wrong.

The order for the switch has actually really been faxed now. We wait, but we don’t panic. Yet. Since Scan do next-day delivery, we should have our largely-unworthy hands on this wonderful piece of equipment fairly soon. Unless the Onion interceeds again.

At the Refresher’s Fayre last Tuesday, we managed to sign up 5 new members - but also spent £10 on a backboard for the event. Which was blue, but not /Compsoc/ blue[1]. Whether this should be deemed as a success or a loss (or both) is left as an exercise to the reader, However, high spirits ensued for the day with the exec, due to the penning of a new Balloon Policy, by which the society executive shall be governed in the prescence of uninflated balloons.

We have now emailed the ‘Computer Console Society’ twice - once to their ‘Yahoo’ account, and once to the ITS account of the president. If we get no response from either by the time of our first meeting next term, then we will have to go to the Onion and see what we can get done /without/ their cooperation.

Seeing as Baz is going, and Tom (Worley) is going, we will have enough hubs, and a BNC uplink. Henry (Southgate) is bringing a Linux box to use as a bridge, so we should be able to configure the network quite easily.
