Connecting to DCS Remotely

Below are some instructions to connect to the Computer science systems for the first time. More detailed information can be found in the DCS Unix User Guide. If you have any issues please do ask for assistance.

Windows

Please follow these steps to get connected to the DCS:

  1. Download PuTTY
  2. Install it
  3. Launch it
  4. In the Host box, enter:
    u20xxxxx@login-1.dcs.warwick.ac.uk
    where u20xxxxx is your uni user code (like u2012345)
  5. Open
  6. Click Yes if it asks about certificates
    The signature can be found here if you want to check.
  7. Enter your DCS password. This will have been emailed to you in the past few days. The password itself is inside a .txt attachment. Don't worry if you don't see anything while typing your password; unlike windows, it doesn't display any placeholder characters while entering passwords.
  8. You should see a system welcome message:

Mac / Linux

Please follow these steps to get connected to the DCS:

  1. Open the Terminal app
  2. Enter the following command:
    ssh u20xxxxx@login-1.dcs.warwick.ac.uk
    where u20xxxxx is your uni user code (like u2012345)
  3. Hit return
  4. If asked about certificates, type yes, and hit enter.
    The signature can be found here if you want to check.

  2. Run pkg install openssl.
  3. Answer y if asked to confirm
  4. Enter the following command:
    ssh u20xxxxx@login-1.dcs.warwick.ac.uk
    where u20xxxxx is your uni user code (like u2012345)
  5. Hit return
  6. If asked about certificates, type yes, and hit enter.
    The signature can be found here if you want to check.

  2. Click +
  3. Enter the following into the SSH Server Address:
    u20xxxxx@login-1.dcs.warwick.ac.uk
    where u20xxxxx is your uni user code (like u2012345)
  4. Tap Connect
  5. If asked about certificates, type yes, and hit enter.
    The signature can be found here if you want to check.
  6. Enter your DCS password. This will have been emailed to you in the past few days. The password itself is inside a .txt attachment. Don't worry if you don't see anything while typing your password; unlike windows, it doesn't display any placeholder characters while entering passwords.
